Lavan have a formal Pro Bono legal practice, which enables our lawyers to contribute their expertise to pro bono clients with the same level of service as provided to our commercial clients. The practice is led by a dedicated full-time pro bono coordinator, Kerri Meyers, and is fully supported by the firm’s partnership.
Our pro bono services and engagement
Our Pro Bono legal practice focuses on issues that impact the day-to-day lives of our pro bono clients, through both casework for individuals and advocacy work for structural change in order to make greater social impacts.
Lavan determine our focus areas by seeking input from our staff regarding the matters they consider most important. The firm is currently focusing on pro bono services in the following four areas:
- vulnerable women and children who are affected by homelessness and/or domestic violence;
- individuals with disabilities;
- youth mental health; and
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Lavan’s commitment to pro bono work is an important aspect of our law graduate program. The firm has a compulsory secondment program that invites graduates to complete a weekly pro bono secondment at a partnering community legal centre prior to admission. This initiative provides all graduates with practical experience in not-for-profit organisations and assisting disadvantaged and vulnerable clients.
In the past two years, Lavan has exceeded national and state pro bono targets required for law firms in Australia who are signatories to the scheme. As such, Lavan’s pro bono leadership has been recognised at both regional and international levels.
Recent awards include:
- Chambers and Partners Asia-Pacific and Greater China Region Awards 2025 – Pro Bono: Outstanding Firm – Highly Commended.
- Western Australia Attorney General’s Community Service Award 2025 – Law Firm Category.
