Lavan is delighted to announce that the firm has exceeded its pro bono target for the 2024 financial year, with a remarkable 3,358 hours of legal work carried out by Lavan legal staff.   This result was achieved through the dedication and collective efforts of practice teams firmwide and reflects Lavan’s ongoing commitment to making a real difference, together.

As a signatory to the Western Australian Pro Bono Services Model,  Lavan recognises its ethical and professional obligation to assist those who cannot access the legal system without incurring significant financial hardship.  In FY2024 Lavan lawyers took on 78 matters for pro bono clients, involving the contribution of 61.5% of our partners and 63% of our wider legal staff.  This amounts to 35.93 hours per lawyer and a financial value of $1,550,595.

Lavan’s Pro Bono practice focuses on issues that impact the day-to-day lives of individual pro bono clients and the important advocacy work of not-for-profit organisations.  Our pro bono work includes advocacy for vulnerable women and children affected by homelessness and domestic violence; individuals with disabilities; youth mental health support services and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

In response to achieving this year’s pro bono target, managing partner Dean Hely said;

It is extremely rewarding to see how the Lavan partners and legal teams have responded to the Pro Bono practice.  As an independent, Western Australian law firm we highly value our local community, and we are proud to be able to assist those in our society most at need.

Access to legal representation is of fundamental importance, particularly when clients are at a disadvantage due to personal hardship and challenging circumstances.

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the many legal practitioners who have actively contributed to the 2024 pro bono matters and encourage all our staff to engage with the program when possible. ”
